How we test and rate NZ online casinos

We don't rank casinos from a spreadsheet. Our team registers a real account at each site, makes a deposit in NZD, plays a spread of pokies and live tables, then requests a withdrawal so we can time it accurately. Every casino is scored against a 25-point checklist across six weighted areas:

  • Safety & licensing (25%) — valid licence, independent game testing (eCOGRA, iTech Labs, GLI), SSL encryption and a verifiable operator behind the brand.
  • Banking & payouts (20%) — native NZD support, realistic minimum deposits, low fees and genuinely fast withdrawals (we time them).
  • Games & software (20%) — the size and quality of the pokies, live-casino and table-game libraries and the studios behind them.
  • Bonuses & fairness (15%) — the real value of welcome offers once wagering requirements, max-bet rules and game weightings are factored in.
  • Mobile & usability (10%) — how the site performs on a phone, load speed and how easy it is to find games and cash out.
  • Support & reputation (10%) — 24/7 live chat quality, complaint history and player feedback.

Where an operator has unresolved payout complaints or a disputed licence, we say so plainly and mark the score down — that is why Roby Casino sits at the bottom of our table despite an attractive headline bonus. Read the full process on our How We Rate page.

The Online Casino Gambling Act 2026: what changed

New Zealand's online gambling landscape changed on 1 May 2026, when the Online Casino Gambling Act 2026 came into force. For the first time, offshore-style online casinos can be licensed to operate for New Zealanders — but the market is deliberately small and tightly controlled by the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA).

DateMilestone
Oct 2025Offshore gambling duty raised from 12% to 16%.
1 May 2026Online Casino Gambling Act 2026 comes into force; DIA licensing framework begins.
Through 2026Transition period — offshore operators may continue accepting NZ players.
1 Dec 2026End of the transition period for unlicensed operators.
Early 2027First DIA licences issued — the market is capped at 15 licensed operators.

Until licensed sites launch in 2027, the casinos on this page operate offshore under licences from jurisdictions such as Curaçao, Malta and Anjouan. It remains legal for New Zealanders to play at them. We update this page as the DIA publishes its licensing decisions.

Legality

Yes, it is legal for anyone aged 18 or over to play at an offshore online casino from New Zealand. The Gambling Act 2003 makes it illegal to operate an online casino from within New Zealand, and restricts local advertising, but it does not make it an offence for players to gamble at overseas sites.

Tax on winnings

This is where most guides stay silent — so here is the plain answer. Recreational gambling winnings are not taxed in New Zealand. Inland Revenue treats them as a windfall, not income, so you keep 100% of what you win. The only exceptions are people who gamble as a business (a small number of professional poker players, for example), whose profits can be taxable.

Crypto caveat: if you win and hold cryptocurrency, the winnings themselves aren't taxed, but any later gain on that crypto can be — Inland Revenue treats crypto as property. See our crypto casino guide for detail.

The 16% offshore gambling duty is paid by operators, not players — it does not come out of your winnings.

NZD payments, deposits and withdrawals

Every casino we recommend lets you bank in New Zealand dollars. The most popular methods for Kiwi players in 2026 are:

  • Visa & Mastercard debit — instant deposits, widely accepted.
  • Bank transfer / PayTo / Online EFTPOS — the mainstream replacement now that POLi has left the NZ market.
  • Neosurf & prepaid vouchers — deposit without sharing bank details.
  • Skrill, Neteller & MiFinity e-wallets — fast withdrawals, often same-day.
  • Cryptocurrency (BTC, ETH, USDT, LTC) — the fastest withdrawals, usually under an hour.
A note on POLi: POLi was withdrawn from New Zealand in 2022. Some casinos still list it, but it is no longer a dependable option — use bank transfer, PayTo or an e-wallet instead.

Chasing a small starting budget? See our guide to minimum-deposit casinos ($1, $5 and $10 options) and fastest-payout casinos.

Pokies and casino games

Pokies (online slots) are the heart of every NZ casino. Our top sites carry thousands of them, from classic three-reel games to feature-packed video pokies and Megaways titles with six-figure jackpots. Beyond pokies you'll find:

  • Progressive jackpot pokies — Mega Moolah, Divine Fortune and other network jackpots that regularly pay seven figures.
  • Live dealer casino — real croupiers streamed in HD, plus game shows like Crazy Time and Monopoly Live.
  • Table games — blackjack, roulette and baccarat in dozens of variants.
  • Video poker — Jacks or Better, Deuces Wild and multi-hand formats with strong RTP.

What is RTP? Return to Player is the percentage of all wagers a game pays back over time. A pokie with 96% RTP returns NZ$96 for every NZ$100 staked on average across millions of spins — so higher-RTP games (97%+) give you better long-run value. We flag the best-RTP pokies in our pokies guide.

Casino bonuses explained

A big headline number isn't the same as a good bonus. Here's what actually matters:

  • Welcome / match bonus — the casino matches a percentage of your deposit (e.g. 100% up to NZ$500).
  • Free spins — bonus spins on selected pokies, often bundled with a match offer.
  • No-deposit bonus — a small bonus just for registering; rare but valuable. See no-deposit casinos.
  • Wagering requirements — how many times you must play through a bonus before withdrawing. 35x is fair; 50x+ is steep.
  • No-wagering bonuses — winnings are yours to keep immediately. Always the best value when available.

Safety, fund protection and complaints

Before you deposit, check three things: a valid licence displayed in the footer, independent game-testing seals (eCOGRA, iTech Labs or GLI), and SSL encryption (the padlock in your browser). Reputable casinos also keep player funds in segregated accounts, so your balance is protected even if the business fails — something few NZ guides mention.

If a withdrawal is delayed unfairly, first raise a formal complaint with the casino's support team in writing. If that fails, escalate to the casino's licensing regulator or an independent dispute service such as those run by casino review bodies. Once DIA-licensed operators launch in 2027, New Zealand players will have a local avenue for complaints.

Play it safe

You must be 18 or over to gamble in New Zealand. Gambling should be entertainment, not a way to make money. Set a deposit limit before you play, never chase losses, and take breaks. If gambling stops being fun, free confidential help is available 24/7 from the Gambling Helpline NZ on 0800 654 655, the Problem Gambling Foundation (0800 664 262) and Safer Gambling Aotearoa. Frequently asked questions

Are online casinos legal in New Zealand?

Yes. New Zealanders aged 18+ can legally play at offshore online casinos. Operating a casino from within NZ is illegal, but using overseas sites is not an offence. From 1 May 2026 the Online Casino Gambling Act 2026 introduced DIA licensing, with the first licensed operators expected in early 2027.

Do I have to pay tax on my casino winnings?

No, not as a recreational player — gambling winnings are a tax-free windfall in NZ. Only people who gamble as a business may be taxed. If you win in crypto, later gains on that crypto can be taxable.

Can I play and deposit in NZ dollars?

Yes. Every casino we recommend accepts NZD, either natively or via automatic conversion, so you avoid currency-conversion fees.

What is the fastest paying online casino in NZ?

Crypto and e-wallet withdrawals are quickest. Among our picks, Neospin, LuckyVibe and Spinjo process most crypto cashouts within 10–60 minutes; cards and bank transfers take one to five business days.

Which NZ casinos accept POLi?

POLi left the NZ market in 2022 and is no longer reliable. Use Visa/Mastercard debit, bank transfer, PayTo/Online EFTPOS, Neosurf, e-wallets or crypto instead.

How do I choose the best casino for me?

Match the casino to your priorities: pick native-NZD banking and crypto payouts for speed, a big multi-studio library for game variety, and a low minimum deposit if you're on a budget. Always check the wagering requirement on any bonus before opting in.

What is the legal gambling age in New Zealand?

You must be 18 to gamble online or buy Lotto/scratch tickets. Entry to a physical casino requires you to be 20.
