The 2025 law change — and what it means for you
From around July 2025, a law change confirmed a statutory monopoly on domestic bookmaking: TAB NZ and Betcha hold the only licences to offer sports and racing betting from within New Zealand. Crucially, the new rules restrict offshore bookmakers from actively accepting New Zealand business — but they do not penalise individual players.
In plain terms: the law targets operators, not punters. A Kiwi who places a bet with an overseas book is not breaking any law. This is why several huge international books — Bet365, Betway and LeoVegas among them — chose to withdraw from the market rather than risk falling foul of the restrictions. The pool of offshore books still openly serving New Zealand is therefore smaller than it was, which is exactly why a carefully vetted, current list like this one matters.
